Description: IN YOUR EYES by Peter Gabriel
love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are
all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes
love, I don't like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
and all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
This is my #1 favorite song of all times. When I was a youth minister my mentor introduced me to this song. I've done sermons and taught bible lessons on the song and it has always been very impactful to me.
So often in my life I've been in hunting mode. What I mean by that is I always seem to be searching. Searching for friends, searching for companionship, searching for $$$, searching for joy, searching for peace, searching for "the" answers. All that searching usually leaves me tired and even more frustrated. i think that is the end result because I'm so focused on me and what makes me happy and comfortable. This song has always reminded me of where my focus and "eyes" needed to be.
Now I know that when most of you hear this song it makes you think of the movie "Say Anything" (if you have not seen that movie, go to the movie rental place and rent it right now, great movie), or it's a song that make you think about romance. I see it a little differently.
It's a very cliche thing to say but it's the truth, you can go in circles and circles but the only thing that will give you joy is living a life in Christ. That doesn't mean your not going to have tough times, but I promise the way you handle those tough times will be very different. The question I have is why do we still search in so many other places for our identity. I ask this question because I know that over the last year I have struggled more than ever with this question. It's like an algebra problem, I know the answer but I seem to struggle with doing the math to get to that answer. I just thank God for the reminders he give me everyday to keep my eyes on Him. I just wish I didn't make it so hard!
When you think of this song as a love for God it is one of the most amazing songs (lyrically) ever written. Read the words a couple times and marinate on them for a while.
Accepting all I've done and said. I want to stand and stare again. Till there's nothing left, it remains there in your eyes. Whatever comes and coes, I will hear your silent call. I will touch this tender wall till I know I'm home again.
In God's eyes, the light the heat. In God's eyes I am complete. In God's eyes, I see the doorway to a thousands churches. In God's eyes, the resolution to all my fruitless searches. I want to touch the light the heat I feel in God's eyes.
I will hear your silent call. In your eyes!
